ABOUT WESTBURY & DISTRICT U3A
The Westbury & District branch of the u3a was formed in April 2011 as a result of a public meeting. A steering group of volunteers was set up to run the branch until it was firmly established and it proved very successful. After only a few months there were 15 interest groups. The first Annual General Meeting was held on 8 May 2012 when a committee was formally elected. This and subsequent AGMs provide an opportunity for new committee members to be elected to replace any outgoing members.
Our U3A holds a monthly general meeting in Westbury URC hall on the second Tuesday of each month, usually with a visiting speaker, and tea/coffee and biscuits afterwards. Click here to see more details about the monthly meetings.
We offer around 20 special interest groups. The subjects are wide ranging, including some that have a broadly educational slant (e.g. archaeology, natural history), some that are primarily practical (e.g. photography, creative textiles), and some that are unashamedly social (canasta, mahjong). But it would be wrong to classify the groups too tightly; for instance a language course is both educational and practical, and often very sociable as well! ABOUT THE NATIONAL U3A
The u3a national body – the Third Age Trust - looks after all the u3as in the UK, providing educational and administrative support. The Trust is overseen by a Board of Directors, to which any u3a member may be elected.
Founded in 1982, u3a is a UK-wide movement of locally-run interest groups that provide a wide range of opportunities to come together to learn for fun. Members explore new ideas, skills, and activities together. Membership is open to anyone who is no longer in full-time work. u3a members draw upon their knowledge and experience to teach and learn from each other but there are no qualifications to pass – it is just for pleasure. Learning is its own reward.
It's all voluntary; a typical u3a will be home to many activity groups covering hundreds of different subjects - from art to zoology and everything in between.
